might be old news but my friend at work who has been teaching me about casting found this today.

I watched a bit of the video and was impressed. seems like it would be much cheaper than either the 2 part rubber molds or the vulcanized rubber molds we use for jewelry.

I am very intrigued by this and I might look into the food grade silicone for something I would handle frequently. Thanks for sharing this.

I use this under some circumstances. It is more commonly referred to as OOGOO online. Hope that helps with you guys' research & experimentation!

This is low cost enough that it's worth trying! Has anyone used this or Oogoo as a mold material to cast parts? I wonder if it works with casting resin?

It's similar to the press putty that Smooth-On makes and can be used pretty much any way you'd use that or, if you make it thinner, as a pourable mold. As long as you don't go nuts with the starch, it'll be as sturdy as other silicone molds and hold up to resin.

Interesting . Smooth On sample packs used to be @$25 to $40. A complete sample kit would run $50 - $80 pre tax.

A caulking tube is $2 - $5
Cornstarch should be the same
Food colouring the same as well
2 part resin cost would remain the same .

Mmm. I could see this being useful for someone in a pinch. I don't see why a person would NOT use this strictly as a traditional urethane or silicone mold alternative if they plan their production steps in advance.

FYI if you "make it pourable" as MarkM mentioned, you will get a lot of shrinkage. It requires that you mix in mineral spirits (most use naptha or acetone) to your material prior to making the mold. The amount of mineral spirits used determines shrinkage. The mineral spirits slowly leave the mold over time and it shrinks accordingly. So if you do this, and mold something ASAP it will be larger than if you wait a week etc. This can be used intentionally to some good effects though...
