For a few years now I have been contemplating making some custom vehicles, but haven't progressed very far.
I've made some designs and sketched out a few things, and gathered some parts, but that is the extent of it. I've really gotten some ideas going in the last few weeks after watching the last Die Hard movie. I hadn't recalled seeing a HIND flying around before, and I got thinking about building a HIND (even though I have 3x of the Target HIND from a few years ago).
I started looking around the place for building parts that I could use when I stumbled over the remains of the deck railing project from earlier in the year. I was told, "If you can use it, fine, otherwise it's going bye-bye." Well, I measured the pieces and discovered I have various heavy plastic lengths that are 4x4, 2x4, or 1x1. Some are between 12-24 inches long. Basically these slid over your standard length of wood. The 4x4s are for the main vertical sections, while the 2x2s are for the horizontal parts. The 1x1s are the vertical bars. I also found a small bag of cut-off pieces from all the sizes to use as greebles and such.
I also have been looking at the big pieces of blue foam my Brother left. These he used to make landscapes and structures for various N scale model railroading projects. I finally put the foam and the plastic deck railing parts together and realized I could use the plastic to build a superstructure of a Russian/Soviet Navy air cushioned vehicle. Just glue the foam together, build the top, then carve out the *skirt*. At this point I'm contemplating a four row of five seat troop area, with a engineering section behind, and a small vehicle section above.
I then realized the JOEs were sorely lacking in equipment to transport vehicles onto Cobra Island or other beach landings, so I started looking up LCACs. I think I can use the longer 4x4s to be the sides (hiding the engines and drive shafts), while using smaller 4x4s on end to create a 2 story elevated cockpit. I have some long plastic lids I got from work (12 inches by 24 inches with a curled edge) that I could make the cargo section and ramps from.
I realized that I also had about ten different Navy characters created that I can ret-con into being LCAC crew. Not sure of a codename, but working on "Rubber Duck". Logo would be a cartoonish bright yellow rubber duck on a hockey puck. Working crew for an LCAC is 5, so five new characters.
I would still like to make the multi-story 'Nockers Dreadnok Road House, with removable sides, but I have had other things come up.
-Also found a TMNT hot rod vehicle at Target recently and thought it looked promising. Opened the box and realized it had the same dimensions of a Thunder Machine, so I'm gonna pop it apart and see if I can bash the two together.
-The RTV from the first appearance of the Oktober Guard is another idea I've had, dating back to 2010. I bought several inflatable tires, along with some parts to get started. I've drawn some basic blueprints to mock it up and and trying to work out whether the cab will be able to rise up or swivel.

-Another TMNT vehicle I bought was a Battle Shell. Hoping to turn it into a Dreadnok Brinks truck.
-Also found some Army magazines from 2007-2009 that showed a pic of a land-based, trailer-mounted CIWS system. If ever there was a Weapons System for the JOEs to have, it is this one.
It is called the Centurion C-RAM.
