So I am trying to figure out how to make the fish bowl part of the DNA donor modules, shown here: Image
I need the fattest part of them, to be no less than 4.3" wide (to fit my custom figures - some with their knees bent). 4.75" wide would probably still work, but larger than that would probably be too big. 90% of them would easily fit in a 4" diameter globe, but some have tall helmets/hats. Since it would have to be open at both the top and bottom, I feel like vacuum-forming is out of the equation. I have looked into going with the other shape shown (in some of the shots from the comic, which is more of a half globe or dome with an opening at the top. I ended up getting some lids for "froze coke" or slurpies that are just too narrow to work (4" at their widest point).
I can't use anything glass, as there is no good way for me to cut a glass globe-like object.
Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated!

My first thought is clear plastic Christmas ornaments balls. Don't knoworry if they make them that big though. Might have better luck finding them closer to the holidays.

Because of the size needed, I thought there might be some kind of product packaging PET that would work, but I haven't seen anything yet. I do have vacuum forming PET sheets, but I don't think that will help me here.

could you sketch out the shape/shapes that would work. i'm having trouble seeing what your after in the art.

my first thought was tennis ball tubes, but they are too narrow (if i'm following correctly!)

I looked the site over, and only saw one thing that gave me an idea, but it is "out there"! lol Looking through the robot section, I saw a rounded wheel... that made me try to think of how to vacuumform all the way around it.

I will sketch something up, today and put it on here!

Here is another pic:

In that pic, the tanks have a metal band around the top and middle, which is probably the route I will go, so as to hide a joint. I think I am going to go the Christmas ornament route, that Dan suggested. I found a pack of 12 for less than $20 on partyspin.com! And the sizing is perfect. I will use the extra globe to help create a jig, to cut the rest with. I am going to have to cut the height of each half down, but It is definitely doable for me, with the equipment I have at my disposal.

Here is the diagram, of what I needed:

Here is a quick representation of the two options, I am choosing between, of the different ways they presented it in the comic - with my largest and smallest figures inside:
Image
What boggles my mind, is how many different ways they presented the same thing. There are technically 5 completely different looks to the same tanks. There is the fishbowl representation, with and without metal bands, the dome with and without bands, and another dome with a metal shroud at the bottom.

I am leaning towards the fish bowl style, as it will allow me to use a smaller base, which saves space in my dio (and room for that matter!)

I've seen clear cereal bowls at Wal-Mart.

That might be a way to go.

I think the smaller size idea to save space is a good call. I'm impressed with how much research and detail is going into this and I'm looking forward to how it turns out.

Thanks Dan! I have been thinking about this dio for a couple years now, but needed those bossfight skeletons to come out, before i could really move on it.

2DARK2C, yes the prices are really good!

I think you could use the upper portions of a 2 liter bottle, maybe. I don't know if they are 4 inches in diameter or not, or if they are clear enough for you, they can be foggy some times.

That was actually the first thing I ever tried... definitely too small. They are just a hair shy of 4" in diameter.
