Post subject: Is Flex Rex still the standard for custom slings?

I know I have a topic going with a myriad of questions, but I feel this is something that might help newcomers (myself included), so I hope it's ok with everybody, but I'm going to branch this off in a separate discussion.

I found the tutorial on making custom belts, slings, knife/sword sheaths, etc outstanding. It was exactly what I was looking for (thank you, rogue tiger!)

But here's my problem. I'm wanting to order some of the Flex Rex that is recommended. I've Googled, I've gone to different crafting sites (Michaels, Joannes, etc), and either the sites have never heard of this stuff, or it's a bag of all kinds of mixed colors. There's some black, but then there's pink, and all these other colors. Now, some people might use this stuff if they are doing customization for a lot of different characters. But my guys aren't going to be walking up and down the runway for Donatella Versace anytime soon (old joke that I will explain some day). Anyhow, all I want is the black Flex Rex, and for the life of me, I can't find any. Has Cobra Commander bought all this stuff in some attempt to lessen the weapon flexibility of G.I. Joe? He's not that smart, is he?

Do you guys that do a lot of customs order this stuff online, or just go into the local crafting shop, and buy it there? Apparently, I need some things. Besides the Flex Rex, I need some 22 gauge galvanized steel wire, a wire cutter. I picked up some Loctite super glue the night before last (dries in 15 seconds).

Are you all even using the Flex Rex anymore, or has something else found favor with our customizers?

Thanks, guys! Hopefully this will help lead a few more of our new members down the interesting road of custom Joes. I'm tiptoeing down that road myself, curious, yet fascinated, too.

i looked on ebay , and everything is multi color, or neon. this pack looks to have more black than others. you might contact the seller to confirm, might just be a stock pick. best price i saw shipped too.

OK I took the search to the next logical step and searched plastic lacing since that is the description of flexrex. that found me Rexlace which on the surface appears to be the same product by my eye at least.

Isn't that the stuff we were talking about for replacement hoses for figures?

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=37920&p=438203&hilit=replacement+hose#p438203

Or is this Flex Rex flatter and non-tubular?

Rexlace isn't the same as flex rex (although they're made by the same company - Pepperell). There's no flex in rexlace. I haven't looked in a long time, but Michaels carried flex rex in the beads and lacing aisle. The upc for flex rex is 725879110307. FRS10149 might be a product number.

Really all you need is some thin black ribbon (1/8" or so) or you could cut or glue in half some wider stuff. You can find that at Michaels too. Some guys also use hockey tape, medical tape, or the lego micro canvas (from sails) and cut it to size.

Edit: I checked michaels tonight and no luck. I dont think they carry flex rex any more. You'll have to order the variety pack or try another material.

Thanks, gang.

I'm sure the stuff I ordered will do in a pinch. If not, I'll find other uses for it in my Joe verse, and order the variety pack. At $5, I'm not going to be devastated if it's no perfect. :)

Well, wouldn't you know it. I ordered the Rexlace, but on a trip over to Joanne's Fabrics, I found a variety bag (as in a single one) of the Flex Rex. About $6-7 for the whole thing.

I wish there were more black, but there are other figures in other outfit colors, so they'll get used. I'll use the Rexlace for making custom web gear, or I'll see if I can make it.

My team is slowly, very slowly, coming together.

DJ, you're thinking of S'getti string which is what people use for custom or replacement tubes.

I bought a roll of the stuff linked to by dremel above. It is not tubular and looks to be perfect for making straps. I have not had a chance to actually use it though.
