My working plan is to post a drawing of a character from each year. I'll post one drawing from an '82 then an '83 and so forth. In addition to the Hasbro release years, I'll also be tacking on Marvel, Sunbow, and Devil's Due character categories, too. Probably not IDW because I'm not familiar with them.

With Scarlett having been the first '82 character, let's an our next Every Joe drawing, General Flagg from the Marvel category.

____

About General Flagg:

In these drawings, I'm updating the character's designs as needed. With General Flagg, however, I'm sticking with the Army's phased-out dress green uniform. They simply look more elegant than the replacement uniforms- to my civilian eyes, no disrespect to those who like (or especially wear) the newer ones. This is an artistic choice. If there's a reality in which BATS and Serpentor exist, then maybe the traditional dress green uniform continued uninterrupted.

In General Flagg's first appearance in GI Joe #1 he was drawn as being a surprisingly young and nerdish general, paired with the older and gruffer "Iron Butt" Austin. He appeared decades older in his following appearances, but I stuck with the younger/dorkier look for General Flagg. The head/face is halfway between Clark Kent and The Joker.

The uniform is probably 40% accurate. Once the drawing was done I realized that I messed up the shape of the lapels. They bottom triangle shapes (no idea what they're called) should be wider than the top ones. Oh, well. The ribbons and buttons and medals and the patch? They aren't meant to mimic any real-world ribbons/medals/patches. They're drawn in a loose, suggestive style. That's because it's easier than technical accuracy, which isn't needed at this "distance from camera". Which is good, because I wouldn't know how to make them look correct.

And just to give you a little warning: I might recycle the body illustration for Colonel Sharp when his time comes. I'm lazy that way.

Needs a .45 M-1911A1. He was a pistol champion after all. :-)

Keep posting these. Looking forward to the next one.

This is great! I always thought my comic pack General Flagg figure resembled my Uncle Buddy, who is Filipino-American, and this looks like his late brother who passed a few years back, as well as my second cousin Andrew.

Everything I've wanted to see in General Flagg. Great work.
