#40 Cobra Commander

Inspired by the Marvel run, particularly on the left uniform, this is Cobra Commander.

I'm sliding this Cobra Commander drawing into the Marvel category because I went with the tall boots and gloves on the Battle Helmet uniform, as first drawn by the late great Herb Trimpe. One of my goals with this project is to present my favorite look for a character, even it's a hybrid or customized look, not to make dozens of drawing of a character if he/she has had multiple versions.

Cobra Commander's wardrobe is too expansive to only chose one of his looks. For the centerpiece look I went with the "Angry Used Car Salesman in a Hood" look. Although not CC's most iconic look, it's a good way to show off the hood and the eyes, and doing so without repeating the dress uniform in the same drawing. A full body shot of the Battle Helmet uniform on one side against partial shot of the Battle Armor on the other side. I like the Battle Armor late 90's recolor, so I used it here. It also gives CC a chance to do something aggressive looking, not just the normal regal/arrogant posturing.

covers all his best looks really well. I like how the light leads your eye along the emblems.

OK, I really like the layout and design of this one.

Is the distorted Cobra logo meant to be a waving flag? It totally reads like that, I was just impressed that it evokes that without any texturing or shading, just the distortion of the shape to suggest the movement.

I too see it as a flag, but at first I was thinking why is the background melting :)

Thanks, guys!

Yes, the distorted Cobra image is meant to suggest a flag. It took several tries and I couldn't get it exactly like I wanted it. There should be folds in which the flag disappears behind waves, if that makes any sense.

Nice! I love the inclusion of the '97 version.

Yeah, it's an overlooked gem. I like it much better than the '87 version!
