What year does JoeCustomsCon debut?
We're more likely to latch on to some regional shows then to try to be the sole content provider.

I'm thinking this is going to be far more like what SDCC has become than what JoeCon ever was. It's a publicity event, first and foremost.

Did they have custom contests at BotCon?

They do have custom contest at BotCon, it's run very much like JoeCon is.

I think most of the "fan" things we've come to expect will be gone. Like what was said above, it'll be more about promotional and marketing than anything else, I believe. I also think it will be such a conglomeration, in trying to be something for everyone it'll be pleasing no one. Too many properties, with not enough focus on any one to draw that particular fan base to travel anywhere, for the most part.

I won't be surprised if they're trying to shop around someone to run a JoeCon after two years. With someone new making a cold start, it's going to take time to get established. Hopefully it won't be too late at that point.

Yup, my fear as well. It will be interesting to hear who they set up as the 'Kevin Feige' for each of the combined movie universe and the corresponding (I assume) combined toy universe.

I'm really not holding out hope for this, but if this means getting a single set scale for all the tied-together universes, and that scale/articulation is the modern Joe format, I'm in. Somehow I feel like the HasCon and combined universe is going to more of a lowest common denominator situation though, rather than bringing out the best of each toyline.

Yeah, I'm holding out exactly *zero* hope that a unified scale would be 18th. It'll be that MASK scale they're pushing, man.

/search your feelings, you know it's true...

This, pretty much all the way. It'll be lowest common denominator for HasCon, despite their best intentions. Anything with scale/articulation of modern era Joe, I'll be into. Anything devolving into 1978 Star Wars figure technology, can continue to sit on the shelf. Same with any other scale.

Sadly the Force Awakens series have given them a big profit. I hope they don't think it is OK to continue those 5 POA figures and drop everything else then. :-(

PARAMOUNT PICTURES AND HASBRO TAP AWARD-WINNING GROUP OF WRITERS TO CREATE CROSS-PROPERTY FILM UNIVERSE

WRITERS ROOM LEAD BY OSCAR WINNER AKIVA GOLDSMAN WILL DEVELOP STORIES FOR HASBRO BRANDS G.I. JOE, MICRONAUTS, VISIONARIES, M.A.S.K. AND ROM

HOLLYWOOD, CA (April 21, 2016) – Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, Inc. today unveiled its top talent writers room which will have responsibility for developing Hasbro’s cross-property interconnected onscreen universe featuring the brands G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionaries, M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) and ROM. This group includes some of the most notable creative talent in Hollywood, including Academy Award Winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), who will have responsibility for overseeing the writers room on behalf of Hasbro and Paramount as well as serving as Executive Producer for all of the films. Joining Goldsman will be Lindsey Beer (Wizard of Oz, Kingkiller Chronicle), Pulitzer Prize Winner Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay), Cheo Coker (Luke Cage, Ray Donovan), Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther, People vs. OJ), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel), Jeff Pinkner (Lost, The Dark Tower), Nicole Riegel (Soldier Girls), Geneva Robertson (Atlantis, Tomb Raider) and Brian K Vaughan (Under the Dome, Lost).

Allspark Pictures, Hasbro’s film label, plans to produce films based on this cross-property universe, with Brian Goldner (Chairman, President and CEO, Hasbro) and Stephen Davis (Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, Hasbro) serving as Producers, and Josh Feldman (Co-Head of Storytelling, Hasbro) as Co-Executive Producer. Hasbro will also deploy in the room an unprecedented team of its top artists and designers to assist Goldsman and the writers to visualize this all-new cinematic universe.

"Paramount and Hasbro have partnered on many successful films in the past, including the 'TRANSFORMERS' and 'G.I. JOE,' franchises," said Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. "Bringing together a writers room of this caliber is a bold step for our partnership, and one that we believe is critical for building these brands into new, successful franchises for the future.”

“Together with Paramount, we have assembled a team of incredibly talented creative minds and storytellers to continue to help tell the rich history and narrative behind this interconnected cinematic universe, and we are thrilled to be working with Akiva Goldsman again to guide this process,” said Brian Goldner. “We are also excited to partner with Paramount to produce the films, as we’ve had a strong and collaborative partnership since our first Transformers movie in 2007.”

The Paramount and Hasbro partnership is responsible for the worldwide blockbuster success of the “TRANSFORMERS” franchise, which has earned $3.8 billion to-date, and whose films, directed by Michael Bay, are amongst the highest grossing movies of all time; and the “G.I. JOE” franchise, which have earned more than $675 million worldwide.

Oh, I'm certain that has something to do with it. They're trying to get everything under a unified direction and control. Unfortunately, unless there's some sort of miraculous success, they'll get bored with trying to do this in a couple years and it'll all be abandoned (think about the numerous line restarts just in Joe.) By then, it'll probably be too late to restart JoeCon in any meaningful way.

The creative team has a couple of really strong members and a pile of too-new-to-knows, overseen by a guy that's the very definition of 'scattershot'. Goldsman being charge of it all is the key factor here, and I think the thing's creative success will depend on him stepping back and letting Chabon and Vaughn do their thing.

I'm only interested because of Chabon. I'm a fan of his novels, but less familiar with any screen work. But, given the material, I don't know what he'll be able to do. There's not a lot to work with here unless they just take trademarked names and general looks and put them into a completely new set of situations. (Which might not be bad.)

But, this whole thing is dependent upon the Transformers franchise being able to spin off the other franchises and get audiences invested enough to stick around and follow the new universe under titles that don't have nearly the Q ratings of the landmark franchise. I'm not sold on that being a given.

It will be interesting to see how the toys play out. If you have a unified story out there on screen, then you need the toys to be compatible with each other. Based on what we've seen in other lines, it's more likely we'll get a little bit of several scales rather than a strong commitment to one.

So..this may or may not be relevant but i was checking out writer Brandon Eastons Twitter feed and noticed the new IDW Micronauts comic book being mentioned multiple times. Upon further investigation someone mentioned that most of the characters in the new comics preview are not recognizable . Baron Karza (?) , Acroyear and maybe Space Glider were immediately recognizable but not the others featured on the cover and in the preview pages. The new characters struck me as major characters.

Point: It's possible that the new comic characters will be included in a fresh take on the Micronauts in a feature film.

Yeah...interpretations. Fresh takes.

.... :shifty:

Yeah, that was obvious from the li'l preview pic they showed, where movie Optimus was holding a trio of Micros and one of them looked like the Starjammer Ch'od. I'm just flabbergasted that Hasbro and Marvel can't work out a way to do the real-deal Micronauts. Either company having half the team is pretty valueless to both, imho.

Well, a number of the Micronaut characters that were part of the Marvel comic were Marvel creations. It's probably not worth the legal hurdles for IDW (or for that matter, Hasbro) to try to get them. I'm willing to give the new Micronauts comic a try (it can't be any worse than what the "big two" are doing with most of their characters in the comics pages these days),. but we'll see what happens.

As for the Hasbro Cinematic Universe -- I remain highly skeptical until proven otherwise.
