Is something as big as the one seen in B:LA an item a mountaineer would hump up a mountain, routinely? Surely there are smaller models, ESP since jerks 'paint' commercial planes down at the airport with li'l pen lasers?

I was thinking in the super technology world of GI Joe of something a little smaller than a backpack to be worn on his back or even just attach to a backpack. But I agree some of the real world ones I have looked at via these links would not be good for scaling a rock face.

I don't know if I agree making Hit n' Run as a sniper, as they are the guys specially trained in long range shooting and work in small teams. I could see Hit n' Run being the scout of the squad and maybe a Designated Marksman, who still work with the squad. As such you could equip him with an M21 (m14 variant), SDM -R or SR-25 (the latter two the modified versions of the basic M-16 design)

As Pluv mentioned earlier about 10th Mountain, I've always seen Hit 'n Run as a soldier recruited out of 10th Mountain who qualified Pathfinder. Pathfinders in the Army almost found the way of the Dodo but 101st, 82nd, 25th, the 10th starting converting their Long Range Surveilance units around 2005 back to Pathfinder detachments. Nobody ever talks about schools like Mountain Warfare or Pathfinder like they do Airborne, Air assault and Ranger or Sniper.

I've always seen Hit & Run as recon/infiltration. He sneaks in, gets the intel, and sneaks out or sneaks in, plants the bomb and gets out.

In one of the Brosnan James Bond films (Tomorrow Never Dies, I think) Bond used a laser designator early on the film and it just looked like large binoculars from what I remember.
