Primary Military Specialty: Search and Rescue
Secondary Military Specialty: Recon
Dutch served in various capacities in the Army's Special Forces division for years, participating in sensitive missions and earning a reputation as a soldier who could get the job done. He eventually landed a post as commander of a search-and-rescue team, whose job was to retrieve U.S. personnel who had been captured or stranded in enemy territory. Dutch's team was killed on one such mission in South America, the details of which are classified. Following that mission, Dutch was placed under a gag order but allowed to choose his next assignment. Citing his desire to work with the best the U.S. Armed Forces has to offer, and his unwillingness to participate in "wet" ops, he requested a transfer to the Joe team.
From Hawk's Files: "If you hang around the military long enough, you're guaranteed to meet somebody who's got "the stare." Some of these guys have seen things in the field that might as well be tattooed to the backs of their eyelids; things that they can't shake loose. For most of them, they can function in their daily lives; certain things just set them off. Dutch is a different story. When he's in the field, he's a model soldier: capable, alert, and focused. The moment he's not on duty, though, it's like somebody turned the power off in his brain. He won't speak, he barely moves, and he just stares at the wall of his bunker. I don't know what he saw out there, but it must have been pretty awful to scare a man that bad. His behavior is downright creepy, and most of the guys are afraid to even go near him. We'd probably try to get him F-4'd off the team, except he's so damn good at his job.
