This custom was inspired by a real-life individual, though he worked on the side of "good" unlike ol' Crystal Ball here. I saw a documentary on the history channel about a famous stage magician who served in the British Army in WWII. By using his knowledge of how to misdirect people and make them believe what he wants them to, he was able to do things like disguise tanks as trucks, "move" Alexandria Harbor and "hide" then entire length of the Suez Canal. I also recommend trying to find the book "The War Magician", which might run you around $12 for a used paperback if you can find it, but is well worth it. It's a fascinating story about the things he did in Africa with his little group known as the "Magic Gang". This also explains the slight WWII influence on CB's uniform.
