Fred Zero is the original Crimson Guardsman, the first of Cobra Commander's elite personal guard (originally made up of his closest friends and followers) to "go under the knife"-and suffer the failures of a less-than-skilled plastic surgeon. Left scarred and blind in one eye as a result of the botched surgery, he believed his dream of serving Cobra was over. Fortunately Cobra Commander did not give up on him so easily, and placed him in a supreme commander position over the entire Crimson Guard faction itself.

In this role he feels most comfortable; he handles mission assignments, deals out rewards and discipline, and keeps his finger on the pulse of the Guard. His disfigured face doesn't reflect his mind, which remains keen and sharp, and he has an almost supernatural ability to sense trouble in the making. Above all he is ultimately loyal to Cobra Commander and would lay down his life for the man if the situation demanded it.
