The most embarrassing issue in the history of G.I.Joe is the one regarding Conrad S. Hauser, A.K.A. Duke. Who would have thought that such a promising soldier would turn his back on his country and defect to Cobra?
First Sergeant Hauser's service records tell the story of a man who had attended the finest military schools from where he graduated with top grades and who is fluent with many languages. He then joined G.I.Joe where he served flawlessly and with pride. Unfortunately the team disbanded in 1994 and Duke all but disappeared from existence. It was later revealed that he had undergone several classified missions for a secret government agency until he rejoined the G.I.Joe when it was reinstated in 2001. The research-department can only guess that it was during that time Duke went through a transformation. No one even suspected that he was a double agent until he revealed his new colors during a crisis, as he'd never shown any hint of a change before then.
From the records of the witnesses' reports: the words of Duke after his defection:
"You haven't been where I've been. Seen what I've seen. You can't judge me. We have been believed to fight a war for the civilians of America, but we've really been fighting for corrupted people who sit on high horses who will do anything to avoid taking the blame for every fiasco they do - instead they make sure that us little people who die for our country pay the price for it."
"You think I'm some kind of monster? You think I want to make war on civilians? Our enemy is not the one's we fight, but the ones who are corrupted and claims that we kill for a peaceful nation. I didn't make those rules, but I can fight by them."
"You can't say that a gun is good and honorable when you're holding it in your hand, and say it's sick and evil in mine!"
"Cobra may not be nicer in their conquest for world-domination - but they want world-wide peace, like everybody does. Like I do!"
It is believed that Conrad Hauser has suffered a case of the "Stockholm's Syndrome", a psychological trauma that causes the victim to believe that his enemy is doing the right thing and start to sympathize with it. But whatever has caused Conrad S. Hauser's change doesn't change the fact that he is Cobra now. He is not to be treated any different. Ex-Sgt Hauser is now known as Marshall - if he's engaged in a combat situation, lethal force is to be used. If he surrenders, he is to be taken alive. But his former teammates may not take that as much of a chance - they know themselves that well.
Personal Comments:
This figure and partly the story is all inspired from the G.I.Joe Reloaded mini-series where Duke became an agent of Cobra. I myself have actually never been a big fan of Duke, he was a bit too super-heroic and fearless for my taste in the old TV-show, and that has followed me to the comics. He becomes more interesting to use in my Joe-verse if he'd joined Cobra - it's a whole unexpected, and for me a fun twist.
I think I should explain myself a bit about the profile so that I don't make anyone angry. When I have Duke speak of corrupted people in America, I refer to the jugglers and senators in the Joe-comics that always want to flush the Joes down the drain and have them rot. I am not in any way sneakily down-talking any real people who currently sit in the American governments. So please, don't anyone think that I am some kind of revolutionary lunatic who's spreading negative propaganda. This is just all in the fantasy.
